Changes to the BICON Egg and egg products case
Effective from 5 December 2024The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has added information notices to the BICON commodity case for the import conditions of eggs and egg products from New Zealand. The option for a permit for table eggs from New Zealand has been removed.
Due to the detection of Highly pathogenic avian influenza egg and egg products from New Zealand must meet the same import conditions as egg and egg products imported from other countries.
Egg and egg products (excluding table eggs):
- Currently the import conditions for egg and egg products cannot be met and importers must apply for a permit.
- Egg and egg products from NZ must meet the thermal heat treatments required for eggs and egg products from all countries.
Table eggs:
- Are no longer permitted import unless the goods are retorted.
- An import permit for retorted goods is required.
The department will work with the NZ MPI to review Australian import conditions in response to the detection and, where possible, to facilitate trade.
This is a live situation that the department is following closely. The department will provide updated information when it becomes available.
Who does this notice affect:
Importers of egg and egg products from New Zealand, Biosecurity Imports Support Team, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections.
