Poppy straw (Papaver somniferum) for processing

This case describes the requirements for the importation of dried poppy straw (Papaver somniferum) for processing. The term poppy straw is used to indicate dried deseeded capsules with 10-20 cm of stem. Material will require mandatory treatment to mitigate biosecurity risks associated with this commodity, or be processed in accordance with approved methods. This case describes the requirements for the importation of herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilisers, bioremediation products, enzymes and other goods for environmental or industrial purposes. Goods have an environmental purpose when they are imported for localised or unrestricted dispersal through the environment. Goods have an industrial purpose when they are imported to be used in manufacturing, construction or processing. Examples of goods with an industrial purpose include glues, waterproofing or ropemaking agents and mining compounds.

Cacti for use as nursery stock

This case describes the requirements for the importation of species of cacti plants and tissue cultures. All plant material requires an import permit prior to importation into Australian territory. Tissue cultures must have root or callus development, be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and inspection prior to release from biosecurity control. Other plant material will require an inspection, fumigation and a minimum 3 months growth period in quarantine at an approved arrangement site for visual disease screening. Unrooted grafted cacti plants from Korea may be imported under an approved system that requires inspection and treatment overseas, to ensure freedom from pathogens and pests of concern. Following inspection in Australia these cacti may be released from biosecurity control without the need for post entry quarantine.

Coir peat

This case describes the requirements for the importation of coir peat for use in the horticulture industry as a growth medium (e.g. coir peat plugs, inserts and pots), mulch or fertiliser. Coir peat is derived from the fibrous husk of the coconut and is typically imported in compressed bricks or bales. This case also describes conditions for coir peat products with additives, these commodities present a different risk and require an import permit.

Bovine embryos

This case describes the requirements for the importation of bovine embryos for artificial reproductive purposes. Donor species are limited to Bos taurus or Bos indicus. All approved countries can import in vivo derived embryos. In vitro derived bovine embryos can currently only be imported from Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America.
