End use terminology changes for laboratory goods for in vitro or in vivo use
Effective from 20 January 2023Please note that over the coming weeks Animal and Biological Imports Branch will be updating standard and non-standard permit cases for laboratory goods. The changes are to clarify end-use conditions and restrictions that apply to the use of imported goods.
The change will only apply to permits for laboratory goods imported for in vitro or in vivo use in laboratory organisms.
The updates will not result in additional restrictions to the use of imported goods. They are terminology updates only, intended to better define what is and isn’t permitted.
What does this mean for you:
There is no action required from current permit holders. The department will not be amending current active import permits unless permit holders apply to vary their import permit via their BICON account (fees apply) to request the updated conditions.

Who does this notice affect:
Industry stakeholders including importers, approved arrangements, freight forwarders and brokers that deal with laboratory commodities, Pathways Operations Cargo – Assessment and Inspections, and biosecurity officers.
