Soils are the unconsolidated material on the immediate surface (approximately top 2 metres) of the earth's surface. They are aggregates of minerals, water, decomposed animal and plant material and micro-organisms. Other commodities that are covered by this classification are stream sediments, tailings, dumps from mining areas and soil-like samples without evidence of origin.
