Risk Background

Quarantine concern associated with seeds

Effective 15 October 2016 to 5 December 2018

Seeds represent a variety of quarantine concerns as there is the potential for:

  1. infestation with insects and/or infection with fungi, bacteria, viruses or nematodes, both externally and internally,

  2. contamination with soil which may also carry pathogenic agents,

  3. contamination with non-permitted seeds.

It is therefore important to inspect all imported seed consignments thoroughly to ensure they meet Department of Agriculture and Water Resources import conditions and are free from obvious disease symptoms and other unwanted organisms.
