Analytical testing for the presence of animal (excluding aquatic) derived material

  1. Testing for animal (excluding aquatic) derived material will be required in any of the following instances:
    1.1. the import permit specifies a requirement for testing, or
    1.2. the product is transported in bulk and the cleanliness of containers or ships holds before export cannot be guaranteed to the satisfaction of officers from the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (e.g. through a pre-approved arrangement), or
    1.3. the product is transported in bulk but, at inspection upon arrival, the cleanliness of containers/holds is not confirmed, or
    1.4. the product is packaged but is packed in packages that are not clean and new, or
    1.5. at inspection on arrival the integrity of packaging is found to be deficient.

  2. Consignments subject to testing for animal (excluding aquatic) derived material will be determined on the basis of the sliding scale described below:
    2.1. every consignment for the first five consignments, then
    2.2. one in five consignments (on a random basis) until five consignments have been tested as negative, then
    2.3. one in 20 consignments (on a random basis).

  3. If at any stage a consignment tests positive the sliding scale will re-start i.e. every consignment for the first five consignments.

  4. Consignments subject to testing for animal (excluding aquatic) derived material will be sampled to ensure a representative sample is taken from every batch/lot of product in the consignment.
    A batch or lot is defined as a single processing run using a defined unit of raw material which generates a certain volume of finished product. Individual batches/lots are reasonably uniform in composition.

  5. Products imported in ships hold or containers (bulk, loose product) must be discharged for sampling to a class 2.3 approved arrangement site (AA site). Each hold or container will be considered a separate batch/lot and will be sampled separately in accordance with the following sampling plan:

  6. Products imported in bags must be directed to:
    6.1. a class 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3 AA site operated by a third party provider (not the importer or buyer), or
    6.2. a class 2.3 AA site. (The option to direct product to a class 2.3 AA site will only be available if specified on the import permit.)

  7. For bagged products importers/customs brokers will need to provide documentation identifying the number and size of batches/lots to be sampled. Sampling requires the collection of a minimum of 100 g of product from 5 separate, randomly selected bags within the consignment.

  8. Samples taken from all consignments (ships hold, containerised bulk product, containerised loose product and bagged) must be sent to AgriGen Pty Ltd

    (Unit 1 of 6, Chaplin Drive, Lane Cove West, NSW 2066). The importer is responsible for all costs associated with sampling, transport and testing.
    Note: Importers/Customs brokers should contact AgriGen Pty Ltd (+61 2 8856 0988, info@agrigen.com.au) for their quote and to agree to the laboratory’s terms and conditions. Samples will not be tested until importers have confirmed agreement with the laboratory’s terms and conditions.

  9. Consignments must be held in quarantine at the AA site until such time as all batches/lots have been verified free from animal (excluding aquatic) derived material and the consignment has been released from biosecurity control by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources regional office.
