SO2/CO2 fumigation and cold treatment schedules

Effective 3 June 2016 to 27 August 2016

SO₂/CO₂ fumigation plus cold treatment for the management of spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) on table grapes from China

Preshipment fumigation with SO₂/CO₂ followed by cold treatment (undertaken either preshipment or in-transit).

The fumigation must be undertaken as per the following: 6 % carbon dioxide (CO₂) and 1 % sulfur dioxide (SO₂) by volume for 30 minutes, at a pulp temperature of 15.6 °C or higher at not more than 33 % chamber load.

The cold treatment may be performed preshipment or in-transit under one of the following schedules:

  1. for 6 days or more at a pulp temperature of -0.5 °C ± 0.5 °C or lower.

Note: the cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment of -0.5 °C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 0.0 °C for the duration of the treatment.

  2. for 12 days or more at a pulp temperature of 0.9 °C ± 0.5 °C or lower.

Note: the cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment of 0.9 °C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 1.4 °C for the duration of the treatment.
