Equipment previously used with animals poses a high biosecurity risk through cross infection from diseased animals. The equipment can carry animal matter, insects, soil and other debris and it may be stored in packaging that also poses high biosecurity risks.

Many viruses and bacteria are able to survive for long periods in dirt, blood and mucous.

The main diseases of biosecurity concern with previously used animal equipment include African swine fever, swine vesicular disease, Classical swine fever, sheep and goat pox, anthrax, Equine influenza, glanders, Foot and mouth disease, Newcastle disease, Avian influenza, salmonellosis and infectious bursal disease.
