SO2/CO2: Risk reduction of Cheiracanthum inclusum and Latrodectus hesperus

Effective 1 July 2022

SO2/CO2 as a measure of risk reduction of yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium inclusum) and black widow spider (Latrodectus Hesperus)

February 2021

All packed table grapes exported from Sonora, Mexico must undergo mandatory pre-shipment fumigation with a mixture of 1% sulphur dioxide (SO2) and 6% carbon dioxide (CO2) by volume for 30 minutes, delivered using forced air at a pulp temperature of 15.6°C (60°F) or greater. The chamber load must not exceed 30%.

  1. Detection of either of Latrodectus hesperus or Cheiracanthium inclusum at SENASICA pre-export phytosanitary inspection:

1.1. SENASICA will suspend the treatment facility.

1.2. SENASICA will investigate and corrective actions will be implemented before the facility can be re-instated.
  2. Detection of either of Latrodectus hesperus or Cheiracanthium inclusum at departmental on-arrival inspection:

2.1. The department will advise SENASICA and request to suspend and investigate the relevant treatment facility.

2.2. SENASICA will investigate and corrective actions will be implemented before the facility can be re-instated.
  3. SENASICA will monitor pest detections with the aim of significantly reducing pest non-compliance.
  4. Where there are ongoing detections of Latrodectus hesperus or Cheiracanthium inclusum at on-arrival inspection, the department will suspend the export program, pending a review by the department of import policy and assess the application of additional pre-export phytosanitary measures.
