Treatment: Sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide fumigation and cold treatment schedules

Effective 10 August 2022

SO2/CO2 fumigation plus cold treatment for the management of oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) and spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) on table grapes from China

Pre-shipment fumigation with SO2/CO2 followed by cold treatment (undertaken either pre-shipment or in-transit).

The fumigation must be undertaken as per the following: 6% carbon dioxide (CO2) and 1% sulfur dioxide (SO2) by volume for 30 minutes, at a pulp temperature of 15.6°C or higher at not more than 33% chamber load.

The cold treatment may be performed pre-shipment or in-transit under one of the following schedules:

  1. for 10 days or more at a pulp temperature of -0.5°C ± 0.5°C or lower.

Note: The cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment of -0.5°C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 0.0°C for the duration of the treatment.
  2. for 12 days or more at a pulp temperature of 0.9°C ± 0.5°C or lower.

Note: The cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment of 0.9°C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 1.4°C for the duration of the treatment.
