Systems approach: C. sasakii, G. inopinata and C. pomonella

Effective 6 February 2021 to 13 October 2021

Systems approach for the management of peach fruit moth (Carposina sasakii), manchurian fruit moth (Grapholita inopinata), and codling moth (Cydia pomonella)

The Chinese National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) has primary responsibility for coordinating and supervising the systems approach to manage the above listed pests.

Key components of the systems approach are:

  1. Orchard surveillance and control.
1.1. Registered growers must implement orchard control programs approved by the Chinese NPPO.
1.2. Monitoring and detection surveys are required.
  2. A 600 unit Quarantine inspection per inspection lot. 60 fruits must be cut and examined to verify fruits are free of C. sasakii, G. inopinata and C. pomonella larvae. Fruit for cutting may be taken from cull fruit.a
2.1. If any C. sasakii, G. inopinata nd C. pomonella* larvae are detected during the fruit cut, the consignment must not be released from quarantine until the remedial action has been undertaken.

* Remedial action to mitigate the risks associated with C. pomonella are only necessary if apple fruit is imported into Western Australia.

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the department) will conduct phytosanitary fruit inspection on arrival. If any of the listed pathogens are detected, the consignment will be rejected. The Chinese NPPO is required to arrange for trace back to identify the source orchard and the source orchard must be excluded from export to Australia for that season or the remainder of the season.
