Risk Background

Risk background: Risks associated with stockfeeds of animal origin

Effective 1 October 2020 to 29 April 2021

Stock feeds of animal origin are considered very high risk products. Important diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) can be attributed to the feeding of ruminant material to ruminants. Many other exotic diseases can be carried by stock feeds so Australia takes a very conservative approach to such high risk commodities. Even low levels of contamination with exotic disease agents are significant given the potential high level of exposure.
