Requirement: Packing house practices

Effective 5 September 2020 to 30 October 2021

Packinghouses must be registered with the exporting National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO).

Whole pomegranate fruit must undergo the following packinghouse practices:

  1. Receival and quality check

    1.1. The quality team ensures that only export quality fruit from orchards registered for export to Australia proceeds for processing.

    1.2. The whole consignment lot is rejected if fruit is infested with pests or shows disease symptoms.

    1.3. Cracked, split, damaged or bruised fruit is removed and discarded.

  2. Cleaning

    2.1. Fruit is washed in large tubs with a brush.

    2.2. Washing water must be clean. It must be treated by reverse osmosis and UV irradiation.

    2.3. A sanitizer at an approved concentration (e.g. Tsunami, hypochlorite at 200ppm) must be used as part of the washing process. The solution must be monitored and changed frequently to ensure appropriate concentration is maintained.

    2.4. The fruit calyx must be cleaned using an air gun, which forces air through a fine-tipped nozzle to remove debris and the stamen cluster.
