Risk Background

Risk background: Biosecurity concern associated with seeds

Effective 18 March 2020 to 1 July 2022

Seeds represent a variety of biosecurity concerns as there is the potential for:

  1. infestation with insects and/or infection with fungi, bacteria, viruses or nematodes, both externally and internally,

  2. contamination with soil which may also carry pathogenic agents,

  3. contamination with non-permitted seeds.

It is therefore important to inspect all imported seed consignments thoroughly to ensure they meet Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment import conditions and are free from obvious disease symptoms and other unwanted organisms.
