Quarantine Pest

Pest Management Measures

Bactrocera dorsalis (oriental fruit fly)

Drosophila suzukii (spotted wing drosophila)

The following treatments are approved as a management measure for both Bactrocera dorsalis and Drosophila suzukii.

  1. Preshipment methyl bromide fumigation followed by preshipment cold treatment under the following schedule:

1.1 at 40g/m³ for 2 hours at a pulp temperature of 21°C or greater at not more than 50% chamber load, followed by cold treatment at a pulp temperature of 2.77°C or lower for 4 days.

    OR

  2. Preshipment fumigation with SO/CO followed by cold treatment. The fumigation must be undertaken as per the following: 6% carbon dioxide (CO) and 1% sulfur dioxide (SO) by volume for 30 minutes, at a pulp temperature of 15.6°C or higher at not more than 33% chamber load. The cold treatment may be performed preshipment or in-transit, under one of the following schedules:

2.1. for 10 days or more at a pulp temperature of -0.50°C ± 0.50°C or lower.

Note: the cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment temperature as –0.5°C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 0.0°C for the duration of the treatment.

or

2.2. for 12 days or more at a pulp temperature of 0.9°C ± 0.50°C or lower.

Note: the cold treatment can only commence once the fruit pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment temperature as 0.9°C or below. The pulp temperature must not exceed 1.4°C for the duration of the treatment.

Bactrocera dorsalis (oriental fruit fly)

  1. Fruit sourced from a pest free area recognised and approved by the Department of Agriculture.

Note: the department recognises that north of the latitude 33rd degree is free of Tephritid fruit flies.

    OR

  2. Cold treatment (undertaken either preshipment or in-transit) under one of the following schedules:

2.1. at 0°C or below for 10 days, or

2.2. at 0.56°C or below for 11 days, or

2.3. at 1.11°C or below for 12 days, or

2.4. at 1.67°C or below for 14 days.

    OR

  3. Pre-shipment fumigation with methyl bromide followed by pre-shipment cold treatment:

3.1. at 32g/m³ for 2 hours at a pulp temperature of 21°C or greater at not more than 50% chamber load, followed by cold treatment at a pulp temperature of 2.77°C or lower for 4 days.

3.2. at 32g/m³ for 2.5 hours at a pulp temperature of 21°C or greater at not more than 50% chamber load, followed by cold treatment at a pulp temperature of 4.44°C or lower for 4 days.

3.3. at 32g/m³ for 3 hours at a pulp temperature of 21°C or greater at not more than 50% chamber load, followed by cold treatment at a pulp temperature of 8.33°C or lower for 3 days.

Drosophila suzukii (spotted wing drosophila)

  1. Fruit sourced from a pest free area recognised and approved by the Department of Agriculture.

Note: the province of Xinjiang is currently the only approved pest free area.

    OR

2.1. for 6 days or more at a pulp temperature of –0.50°C ± 0.50°C or lower.

Note: the cold treatment can only commence once the pulp temperature reaches the set point for treatment temperature as –0.5°C or below.

    OR

  3. Preshipment methyl bromide fumigation under the following schedule:

3.1. at 40g/m³ for 2 hours at a pulp temperature of 16°C or greater at not more than 50% chamber load.

Physalospora baccae (grape cluster black rot)

Guignardia bidwellii (black rot)

Alternaria viticola (spike stalk brown spot)

  1. Fruit sourced from a pest free area recognised and approved by the Department of Agriculture.

Note: the province of Xinjiang is currently the only approved pest free area for Physalospora baccae and Guignardia bidwellii. Alternaria viticola is effectively managed in Xinjiang through unfavourable climatic conditions, standard commercial practice and phytosanitary inspection.

    OR

  2. Fruit produced under a systems approach specific to these pests.

Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (grapevine phylloxera)

  1. Fruit sourced from a pest free area recognised and approved by the Department of Agriculture.

Note: the province of Xinjiang is currently the only approved pest free area.

    OR

  2. A sulfur pad with proven efficacy against D. vitifoliae must be packed inside the plastic liner of all cartons of table grapes for export to Australia.

    OR

  3. Preshipment fumigation with SO/CO followed by cold treatment (as one of the measures applied above for Drosophila suzukii or for both Bactrocera dorsalis and Drosophila suzukii).
