General Rationale

Genetically modified seeds and plants

Effective 14 July 2015 to 6 December 2018

Genetically modified seeds and plants are plants that have had DNA modification using genetic engineering techniques must be accompanied by a valid import permit. All applications must include detailed information regarding the mode of genetic modification and the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) registration number. The trait is assessed as to whether it presents a biosecurity risk (e.g. increased weediness). In addition, all applications to import genetically modified seeds and plants must be referred to the OGTR prior to issuing an import permit. The OGTR is a part of the Australian Government Department of Health.
