Risk Background

Biosecurity risks of waste and scrap metal

Effective 26 August 2015 to 2 July 2016

Scrap and waste metal may be sourced from anywhere including garbage dumps, and may not be cleaned prior to compacting and exporting to Australia. Consignments are imported from many countries including giant African snail host countries. Due to its nature, scrap and waste metal is very difficult to inspect thoroughly and could contain live animals (e.g. snails, insects), animal and plant material and soil. This biosecurity risk material could introduce new animal or weed pest species, and animal and plant diseases.
