Risk Background

Quarantine concern associated with seeds

Effective 14 July 2015 to 15 June 2016

Seeds represent a variety of quarantine concerns as there is the potential for:

  1. infestation with insects and/or infection with fungi, bacteria, viruses or nematodes, both externally and internally,

  2. contamination with soil which may also carry pathogenic agents,

  3. contamination with prohibited or restricted seeds.

It is therefore important to inspect all imported seed consignments thoroughly to ensure they meet Department of Agriculture import conditions and are free from obvious disease symptoms and other unwanted organisms.
