Changes to standard permit application forms for import of live plants, seed and research materials

Effective from 26 November 2024

The department has updated the import permit application forms for the following commodities:

  • Seed for sowing
  • Nursery stock
  • Bulbs
  • Cannabis spp.
  • Piper methysticum
  • Live plant-related microorganisms for in vitro and/or in vivo research in plants

The key change for the seed for sowing and live plants (nursery stock) import permit application forms is to remove the mandatory requirement for permit applicants to provide a PEQ Reference Number (PRN) in support of their application to import high-risk goods undergoing post-entry quarantine at the department’s Mickleham facility.

Instead, permit applicants will need to provide email evidence from the Mickleham PEQ Plant team (via PEQplants@aff.gov.au) to confirm acceptance of future consignments with PEQ Mickleham. This will reduce the complexity of forward planning for consignment management at Mickleham PEQ.

For ‘Live plant-related microorganisms for in vitro and/or in vivo research in plants’ application form, the key change is for applicants to detail information relating to their recent audit and containment history for the approved arrangement facility where the goods are to be stored.

In addition to the above, a range of other minor changes have been made to standard application forms, including the following:

  • Clearer wording for the first time applicant question;
  • Clearer guidance on plant identity requirements;
  • Emphasising applicant responsibilities in making arrangements for goods requiring onshore treatment and/or PEQ management;
  • Optional question to allow for more detailed information relating to genetically modified goods;
  • General changes to ensure consistency between the seed and nursery stock permit application forms;
  • Updated legislative and weblink references.
