Addition of species to the ‘Rutaceae seed for sowing requiring treatment or testing’ case

Effective from 11 September 2024

The department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has completed a Weed Risk Assessment (WRA) for the species Luvunga monophylla and Paramignya trimera.

The assessment has determined that Luvunga monophylla and Paramignya trimera are present in Australia and not under official control, and therefore cannot be prohibited based on weediness.

As a result, these species may be permitted entry into Australian territory subject to the import conditions of the ‘Rutaceae seed for sowing requiring treatment and/or testing’ BICON case, to manage associated disease risks.

Background
The Weed Risk Assessment system is a science-based quarantine risk analysis tool for determining the weed potential of a plant. All plants proposed for importation into Australia and not currently permitted on BICON are assessed for their potential to become weeds in Australia. Further information on the Weed Risk Assessment system is available on the Weed Risk Assessment system is available on the department's webpage.

Import permits
Current import permits will not be updated to reflect this change, any permit holders intending to import these species will have to apply for a variation to include any additional species.

Who does this notice affect?
Importers of Rutaceae seed for sowing, customs brokers and departmental staff.
