New no permit required pathway for aquatic mollusc and crustacean fluids and tissues

Effective from 6 September 2024

A new import pathway has been created to facilitate the import of mollusc and crustacean fluids and tissues for laboratory use without a biosecurity import permit. Even if an import permit is not required, import conditions must still be met. The import conditions can be found within the Animal fluids and Tissues (excluding viable reproductive material) case in BICON.

The conditions require the goods to be non-viable (dead) crustaceans and molluscs free of biosecurity risk material. Oysters, freshwater snails, freshwater crayfish, prawns and crustacean meal cannot be imported under these conditions, as per the Biosecurity (Conditionally Non-prohibited Goods) Determination 2021.

Importers of molluscs and crustaceans for human consumption should refer to the BICON case for Seafood (excluding finfish) for human consumption.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of mollusc and crustacean fluids and tissues for scientific use, brokers, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and inspections.
