New import conditions for fresh table grapes from Japan

Effective from 2 September 2024

Import conditions have been published on BICON for the importation of fresh table grapes (Vitis vinifera and V. vinifera hybrids) from Japan.

The final report for table grapes from Japan was published in 2014, however trade did not occur.

This change has arisen following engagement with Japan and the bilateral agreement of conditions.

These import conditions have been based on the standard commercial production practices and packing procedures in Japan. Fresh table grapes from Japan must be produced under an approved systems approach to mitigate the risk of Drosophila suzukii and a separate systems approach for five regulated pathogens. A sulphur pad is required to manage Daktulosphaira vitifoliae and pre-export inspection and certification is necessary to ensure freedom from other quarantine pests and risk material. A system of traceability and registration of entities and pack houses, is managed by Japan.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of fresh table grapes from Japan, freight forwarders, brokers, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections and Client Contact Group.

Import permits:
Prior to the importation of these goods into Australia, a valid import permit issued by the department is required.

An import permit may be obtained by submitting an import permit application to the department (if viewed online, use the 'Apply Now' button at the bottom of the BICON case).
