Updates to marine snail pathway

Effective from 27 August 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has updated the non-personal use marine snail pathway within the Snails for human consumption BICON case.

The non-personal use marine snail pathway now comprises of two separate pathways:

  • ‘Whole or partially whole snails (within shell)’ which will require a freezing declaration to be presented or the goods will be subject to a mandatory inspection on arrival to verify they are non-viable (dead).
  • ‘Snail flesh or composite products containing snails’ which will require declaration attesting to the type of goods being imported and may be subject to an inspection on arrival to verify the goods are as described by the manufacturer.

The updated pathways align with current policy for snails for human consumption and ensure the biosecurity risks are managed to an appropriately low level to achieve Australia’s Appropriate Level of Protection.

Importers (or their brokers) wishing to import marine snails for non-personal use should navigate the snails BICON case and meet requirements of the newly created pathways.

Who does this notice affect:
Imports of snails for human consumption, brokers, BIST, Pathway Operation Cargo – Assessments and Inspections.
