Changes to the BICON case for Dairy

Effective from 3 July 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has made changes to the BICON case Dairy, in the pathway for Cheese and butter.

  • The application form for butter and cheese from department approved foot and mouth disease (FMD) free countries (excluding Chile) has been changed to lock the option to only the FMD-free country list for country of export and country of manufacture.
  • The standard permit for butter and cheese from Chile has been discontinued. Importers of butter and cheese from Chile will need to apply for a non-standard permit.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of butter and cheese, Biosecurity Imports Support Team, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections

Background:
The application form has been changed to prevent countries not on the departments approved FMD free list being selected.

The country of manufacture has also been changed to allow for the FMD free country list to be included on permits. This makes standard permits more flexible, allowing one permit to be for all eligible countries of manufacture.

The standard permit for butter and cheese from Chile has been discontinued due to lack of use. Importers can still apply for permits for butter and cheese from Chile under a non-standard application.
