Changes to the BICON case for Unretorted meat

Effective from 28 June 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has made changes to import conditions for fresh (frozen or chilled) beef from Japan.

  • The appendix in the standard permit that listed approved establishments in Japan has been removed from the permit.
  • The conditions listing a specific establishment has been removed from the non-standard permit.
  • The above have been replaced with a condition that the beef must be processed in establishments which have approval and are under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan.

NOTE: The changes only apply to permits issued after 28 June 2024.

If importers wish to have their permits updated, they will need to apply for a variation to the permit.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of fresh beef from Japan, Biosecurity Imports Support Team, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections.

Background:
It was decided that it would be more efficient not to include a list or include specific establishments that may change and require permits to be amended.
