Changes to the import conditions for chicken meat from New Zealand

Effective from 23 February 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has made changes to the import conditions for chicken meat and chicken meat products from New Zealand, as New Zealand has regained freedom from infectious bursal disease.

Import conditions now allow both uncooked and cooked chicken meat to be sourced, manufactured and exported from the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

Importers of chicken meat from New Zealand can apply for a permit using the BICON commodity case ‘Unretorted meat’.

Importers have the option to apply for a standard permit (for non-composite chicken meat) or a non-standard permit (for composite products, i.e. products which contain ingredients other than exempt approved ingredients). If importers wish to have specific products listed on the permit, they can apply for a non-standard permit, even if the goods could meet the standard permit conditions.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of chicken meat products from New Zealand, Biosecurity Imports Support Team and Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections.
