Revised conditions for Stranvaesia spp. nursery stock in line with current taxonomic nomenclature

Effective from 28 February 2024

Effective immediately, the following species of Stranvaesia are subject to regulatory measures that are consistent with those in place for imported Photinia nursery stock.

  • Stranvaesia davidiana
  • Stranvaesia davidiana var. undulata
  • Stranvaesia undulata

Additionally, Photinia undulata has been identified as the accepted name for S. undulata, S. davidiana var. undulata and P. undulata is now included as a permitted species that can be imported subject to compliance with all import conditions.

This change is being implemented following a departmental taxonomic review for Stranvaesia species. The review identified that members of the Stranvaesia genus that are permitted for import as nursery stock are synonyms of members of the Photinia genus.

For further information on import conditions for Stranvaesia spp. nursery stock, refer to the BICON case, “Hosts of fire blight, sudden oak death and Xylella fastidiosa for use as nursery stock”.

Background:
The department undertakes reviews of accepted taxonomy of permitted plant species from time to time. This ensures that risk management measures remain aligned with current information, and conditions remain effective in managing the biosecurity risks posed by imported commodities.

Import permits:
There are no active import permits affected by this change.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of Stranvaesia spp. for use as nursery stock, brokers, and department staff.
