Review of import conditions for laboratory animals

Effective from 17 April 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) has completed a review of the import conditions for the following commodities:

  • amphibians
  • ferrets
  • invertebrates (aquatic and terrestrial)
  • rats and mice embryos, semen and ova.

Following the review, the department has made updates to clarify the import conditions and veterinary health certificate requirements for importers.

Please note, the conditions for these commodities have not changed.

The BICON pathway for ‘Freshwater snails (including those infected with schistosoma parasites)’ has been removed in order to simplify BICON. Permit applications for all invertebrates, including snails, can now be submitted by navigating to the BICON pathway ‘Invertebrates (aquatic and terrestrial)’.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of live laboratory animals and their reproductive material.
