Enhancing the enforceability of import permit conditions for unretorted foie gras from France

Effective from 27 March 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is enhancing the enforceability of standard import permit conditions for unretorted foie gras from France.

The current biosecurity measures for unretorted foie gras from France include that:

  • The goods do contain animal materials other than livers of ducks and/or geese which are farmed, slaughtered, and manufactured in France.
  • During the stuffing periods prior to slaughter, there has been no outbreak of any relevant avian diseases on the properties from which the livers were derived.
  • The foie gras must be heat treated at a minimum core temperature that has been approved by the department and listed in the import conditions.

The standard import permit conditions for unretorted foie gras from France, have been updated to enhance the enforceability of these measures in the event of a non-compliance.

No changes have been made to the documentation (Health Certificate) requirements and standard import permit holders will not need to make any changes to their current importation procedures.
