Changes to the import conditions for egg powder

Effective from 22 November 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) has implemented changes to the import conditions for egg powder in accordance with the recommendations of the review of egg powder from approved countries.

What’s changed:
Import conditions for egg powder have been changed to include the following additional heat treatments as alternatives:

Egg white powder

  • After spray drying, the powder is ‘hot boxed’ at 65°C for a minimum of 5 days

Whole egg powder or egg yolk powder

  • The liquid whole egg or egg yolk is pasteurised at 65°C for a minimum of 6 minutes, prior to spray dry

There are no other changes to the import conditions for egg powder and existing heat treatments will continue to be accepted.

Permits issued before 22 November 2023:
For valid import permits issued before 22 November 2023, the department does not intend to vary or update the permit conditions to include the additional heat treatments. Importers can apply to vary their current permit include the additional heat treatments or apply for a new permit.

Note: As varied permits retain the original expiry date and attract the same application and assessment fees as a new permit application, importers may prefer to apply for a new permit.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of egg powders, Biosecurity Imports Support Team, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections
