Changes to the import conditions for egg and egg products

Effective from 5 February 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has made changes to the import conditions for egg and egg products for human consumption and all end uses other than animal consumption, bioremediation agents or fertilisers, growing purposes, or veterinary therapeutic use.

Minor changes have been made to clarify the existing conditions in all import scenarios.

The import scenario for ‘Products containing 10% egg or greater’ has been updated to clearly state that the standard permit conditions exclude mooncakes, egg powder, liquid egg products, goods containing egg shell or egg shell membrane and goods containing animal derived ingredients other than egg and less than 10% dairy by dry weight.

Importers who wish to import goods containing 10% egg or greater, which do not meet the standard permit conditions, should use the import scenario ‘Other’ to apply for a non-standard permit.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of egg and egg products, Biosecurity Imports Support Team and Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections.

Background:
The changes have been made to:

  • ensure import conditions align with the department’s import legislation, the Biosecurity (Conditionally Non-prohibited Goods) Determination 2021 (where applicable).
  • help importers better understand the import conditions for egg and egg products and determine the most appropriate import scenario for their goods.
  • enhance the enforceability of import conditions in the event of non-compliance.
