Change to evidence requirements for synthetic materials

Effective from 1 February 2024

On 01 February 2024 the following changes were made to the Synthetic material BICON case:

Consignments of synthetic material will now need to provide either:

  • Evidence that the goods are not genetic material (including but not limited to synthetic genetic material), OR
  • A statement that the goods do not code for a disease agent or part of a disease agent.

It is already a condition of the existing BICON case that goods do not code for a disease agent or part of a disease agent. The changes implemented on 01 February 2024 ensure the existing consignment-specific evidence requirements can clearly demonstrate adherence to this condition.

The department provided notice of this change via a BICON alert on 17 January 2024.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of synthetic material, brokers and Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections
