Addition of new sports supplements information notice
Effective from 24 November 2023The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has added an information notice in the BICON commodity case Protein powders and supplements for human consumption.
There have been no changes to the biosecurity import conditions.
Information notice:
- The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) consider certain sports supplements, in the form of a tablet, capsule or pill, to be therapeutic products that must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).
- The TGA consider that therapeutic use includes (but is not limited to) the following functions:
gaining muscle |
increasing mental focus |
increasing metabolism |
increasing stamina |
modifying hormone levels |
increasing testosterone levels |
reducing oestrogen levels |
injury repair |
losing weight or fat |
preparing for workout |
recovering from workout |

Fact Sheet: Regulation of sport supplement products in Australia: Information for importer/sellers - From 30 November 2023, sports supplements in the form of a tablet, capsule or pill, that are referred for inspection under the Imported Food Inspection Scheme and are assessed as being within scope of the new requirements will be referred to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
