Changes to pathway names and addition of a standard fish oil pathway

Effective from 1 February 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) has made changes to the BICON commodity case for Fish oil.

Update to pathway names:
The pathway names have been changed to be more descriptive to allow importers to choose the correct import conditions more easily.

Additional information provided:
Information has been added to the landing page advising importers that their goods may be able to meet more than one set of import conditions and that they should choose the option that best suits their needs.

New standard import permit introduced:
A standard permit has been introduced for all fish oils imported for human consumption, human therapeutic use and cosmetic use in humans.

The permit has conditions for fish oil that has been heat treated prior to arrival in Australia and the option for further processing at a Class 3 Approved Arrangements site for fish oils that have not been heat treated prior to arrival in Australia.

This permit may be suitable for non-salmonid fish oil that cannot meet the alternative conditions not requiring an import permit.

A standard permit contains a specific set of conditions that have been assessed by the department as being appropriate to manage biosecurity risks for a certain commodity type. These permits do not list product names and any good that meets the permit conditions can be imported using the permit. More information on standard permits can be found on the departments website: Standard permits for biological products

If the goods cannot meet the standard conditions, the importer must apply for a non-standard permit and the goods will be individually assessed and product names listed on the permit.

Who does the notice affect:
Importers of fish oils, Biosecurity Imports Support Team, Pathway Operation Cargo - Assessments and Inspection.
