Changes to import conditions for canned or retorted pet food

Effective from 30 June 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has reviewed import conditions forĀ canned or retorted pet food and as a consequence have amended the documentation conditions for those products that do not contain ruminant derived ingredients (other than bovine dairy).

The Official government veterinary certificate must now include:

  • A statement that all animal material (other than dairy, avian or fish material, or material of Australian or New Zealand origin) was derived from animals that were subjected to ante- and post-mortem inspection and were found to be free from contagious and infectious disease

This replaces the previous condition that required ante- and/or post-mortem inspection.

Who does this alert affect:
Departmental staff and Australian importers of pet food, pet food ingredients, and supplements for companion animals that import or intend to import canned or retorted pet food not containing ruminant derived ingredients.
