Changes to live rats and mice for laboratory use

Effective from 28 June 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) has reviewed import conditions for live rats and mice for laboratory use and reformatted the conditions for this commodity. The updates to the existing pathway will help to clarify import conditions and make the veterinary health certificate requirements clearer for importers.

The department has also updated the application form for live rats and mice for laboratory use. The permit issued will automatically include import conditions for both rats and mice which have been tested for hantavirus and rats and mice which have not been tested for hantavirus.

Please note, the conditions for this commodity have not changed.

Other pathways under the BICON case Live animals and their reproductive material for laboratory use, will see similar changes in the coming weeks.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of live laboratory animals and their reproductive material.
