Changes made to import conditions for the end use of betel nut

Effective from 3 May 2023

The import conditions have been changed to make the requirements clearer about the end use of betel nut. Betel nut is limited to goods intended for human consumption, religious or ceremonial use only. Betel nut is listed as a prohibited plant under Schedule 23 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and is not permitted to be on-sold as food.

Changes include (but are not limited to):

  • Changing the case name from ‘Betel nut for human consumption’ to simply ‘Betel nut’.
  • Addition of pathways for ‘personal use’ and ‘religious or ceremonial use’ with relevant import conditions.
  • Addition of information notices on prohibition of commercial sale of betel nut as food.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of betel nut, brokers, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspections and biosecurity staff.
