Changes to the import of retorted goods

Effective from 11 July 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (department) has made minor changes to the import conditions and import pathways for retorted goods.

  • Addition of redirects to commodity cases for some aquatic products (e.g., snails, seafood, and prawns).
  • Updates to the import pathway titles.
  • Addition of answer help to provide more detail on what import pathways cover.
  • More clarification about import conditions that must be met for goods that do not require an import permit.
  • Update to the wording of the standard import permit pathway for retorted goods to make it clear that the standard conditions exclude the import of bird’s nests, products containing discernible pieces of egg (including whole eggs) and refrigerated goods.

These changes have been implemented to help importers better understand the import conditions for retorted products entering Australian territory. The changes will also assist importers in choosing the most applicable BICON case and import pathway for their goods.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of retorted goods, BIST, brokers, biosecurity staff and Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and Inspection.
