Removal of TGA restriction for personal injectables containing material of animal or human origin

Effective from 23 December 2022

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) have removed the requirement for approval to be granted to individual patients for the personal importation of injections containing material of human or animal origin, other than insulin.

Biosecurity import conditions do not exclude personal imports of injectables containing material of human or animal origin. As such, this change does not impact biosecurity import conditions. However, the BICON case did advise importers that the TGA personal importation scheme did not allow importation of injections that contain material of human or animal origin, other than insulin.

This notice has now been removed from the relevant BICON pathway – Human therapeutics for personal use (commercially prepared and packaged)

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of personal injectables for human therapeutic use and biosecurity officers.
