Revised BICON case content for Veterinary therapeutics and veterinary therapeutic ingredients

Effective from 25 October 2022

The department has updated the content of the ‘Veterinary therapeutics and veterinary therapeutic ingredients’ BICON case.

Importers are now able to apply for an import permit for Goods that are approved ingredients for use in production of veterinary therapeutics using a standard import permit pathway. This pathway supports the importation of bulk ingredients that will be further processed in Australia into a finished product that is a veterinary therapeutic.

The standard pathway includes conditions requiring manufacturers to verify that:

  • The only ingredients of animal, plant or microbial origin contained in the goods exported to Australia are on the department’s list of approved ingredients for use in production of veterinary therapeutics.
  • The goods exported to Australia have been packaged in new and clean containers or bags or that the goods exported to Australia are transported in re-used containers and the consignment is accompanied by a cleanliness certificate verifying that the container have been cleaned and inspected for cleanliness before filling.

Goods exported to Australia may be used for production of veterinary therapeutics at a facility which is accredited by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) under their manufacturers' licensing scheme.

Importers are still able to submit their permit application for these goods using a non-standard permit pathway.

Background:
Updates to case content will improve the experience for users of the department's BICON database.

Who does this notice affect:
Departmental staff and Australian importers of goods that will be used for production of veterinary therapeutics in an APVMA licensed facility.
