Revised pathogen screening requirements for Vicia spp. seed for sowing

Effective from 30 November 2022

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has reviewed the pest status of Red clover vein mosaic virus. This pest is considered to be present in Australia and not under official control, and no longer meets the definition of quarantine pest for Australia.

As a result of the review, Vicia spp. seed for sowing will no longer require testing to confirm freedom from Red clover vein mosaic virus during the post-entry quarantine period.

All other import requirements will continue to apply. For example, post-entry quarantine growth and active testing is still required to manage the risk of other quarantine pests associated with Vicia spp. seed for sowing, including Broad bean stain virus, Broad bean mottle virus, Broad bean true mosaic virus and Pea early browning virus.

Import permits:
Import permits will be varied to reflect the changes, at no cost to permit holders. The department will contact affected permit holders regarding these variations.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of Vicia spp. seed for sowing, brokers, and department staff.
