Changes to standard permit cases for cloning/expression and viral vectors

Effective from 21 November 2022

The department has reviewed import conditions for vectors (cloning/expression and viral vectors) and has developed two new standard pathways with the BICON case "Genetic material (nucleic acids and their derivatives) excluding plants and plant pathogens".

  • Standard laboratory vectors for routine scientific purposes, and
  • Standard laboratory vectors for nucleic acid sequencing.

The new pathways will clarify import conditions and broaden the range of vectors that can be imported using a standard permit. Importers are encouraged to review the import conditions for these two cases and apply for a standard permit if conditions can be met.

From 22 December 2022 conditions to import vectors under the following standard cases will be removed:

  • Standard laboratory microorganisms and infectious agents, and
  • Genetic material derived from or homologous to sequences from disease agents, and
  • Genetic material derived from or homologous to sequences from multicellular organisms

Please note:

  • There is no action required from current permit holders. The department will not be amending current active import permits unless permit holders apply to vary their import permit via their BICON account (fees apply) to request the updated conditions.
  • Any applications submitted before 22 December 2022 that include standard cases being replaced or amended will be processed as applied for. Applications submitted after this date will no-longer have those options available.
