Khapra beetle measures: Changes for processed potato products for human consumption (Phase 4)

Effective from 6 May 2022

As notified on 28 April 2022, the import conditions for processed tuber and corm products were updated to include the requirement for a phytosanitary certificate for products packed in bags greater than 25kg and imported as high value freight.

The department has reviewed this requirement for processed potato products (i.e. flour, meal, powder, flakes, granules or pellets of potatoes). The review considered the method and degree of processing to which these products are subjected to. As a result, the import conditions have been updated to remove the requirement for a phytosanitary certificate for processed potato products packed in bags greater than 25kg.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of processed potato products, biosecurity industry participants and accredited persons operating under the department’s class 19.2 automatic entry processing for commodities (AEPCOMM) approved arrangement and other stakeholders in the import and shipping sectors.

Background:
The department is strengthening the import conditions for commodities that are hosts of khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium). Khapra beetle is a national priority pest for Australia. It is a serious pest of a wide range of stored plant products including grains and has potential to cause significant economic consequences to Australia.
