Changes

Revised case structure for Human therapeutics and medicines

Effective from 26 April 2022

As a result of amendments to the Biosecurity (Conditionally Non prohibited Goods) Determination 2021, import conditions in the BICON commodity cases ‘Veterinary Therapeutics and Veterinary Therapeutic Ingredients’ and ‘Human therapeutics and medicines’ have changed.

The department has published a list of “Approved semi-synthetic, fermentation-derived active ingredients” on the department’s website here.

Alternative conditions for goods contained on this list have been developed, and an import permit is no longer required.

Although an import permit is no longer required, import conditions will continue to apply. Please see the relevant BICON case for specific import conditions. If these alternative import conditions cannot be met, importers can still apply for an import permit for these active ingredients, and a case-specific risk assessment will be completed.

There has been a minor amendment to the department's list of ‘Approved Ingredients for Veterinary Therapeutics and Cosmetics for Animals’ and ‘Approved biological ingredients’ list within the ‘Human therapeutics and medicines’ BICON case. These lists are only relevant to therapeutics that are commercially prepared and packaged, retail-ready products. The entry “fish oil (other than salmon oil)” has been amended to become “fish oil (other than fish oil derived from members of the family Salmonidae or the genus Plecoglossussalmon oil)”.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of veterinary therapeutic active ingredients and retail ready products, Importers of human therapeutic active ingredients and retail ready products, Pathway Operations Cargo - Assessment and/or Inspections, Client Contact Group.
