Updates to species listings in the ‘Plant species that are weeds’ BICON case

Effective from 28 July 2022

Colocasia mannii has been added to the ‘Plant species that are weeds’ BICON case, as this species has been assessed as posing an unacceptable weed risk, and is therefore not permitted entry into Australian territory.

Background:
This change is being made following a request to add Colocasia mannii to the permitted species list under BICON. However, following an assessment by the department, it was determined that this species poses an unacceptable weed risk to Australia and is therefore not permitted entry into Australian territory. The Weed Risk Assessment system is a science-based quarantine risk analysis tool for determining the weed potential of a plant. All plants proposed for importation into Australia and not currently permitted on BICON are assessed for their potential to become weeds in Australia. Further information on the Weed Risk Assessment system is available on the department's website.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of seed and nursery stock, customs brokers and departmental staff.
