Effective from 7 May 2019

The department has completed a Weed Risk Assessment on the following Lilium species; Lilium debile, Lilium eupetes, Lilium matangense, Lilium medogense, Lilium saccatum, Lilium wenshanense and Lilium yapingense.

As a result, these species have been added as permitted to the BICON cases ‘Medium risk plants for use as nursery stock’ and ‘Bulbs to be grown in open quarantine for use as nursery stock’.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of Lilium spp. for use as nursery stock, Assessment Services Group, Inspection Services Group.

Background:
The Weed Risk Assessment system is a science-based quarantine risk analysis tool for determining the weed potential of a plant. All plants proposed for importation into Australia and not currently permitted on BICON are assessed for their potential to become weeds in Australia. Further information on the Weed Risk Assessment system is available on the department’s website.

An assessment was undertaken by the department on Lilium debile, Lilium eupetes, Lilium matangense, Lilium medogense, Lilium saccatum, Lilium wenshanense and Lilium yapingense. It was determined that the species are of a low risk of becoming weeds in Australia.

Import Permits:
Current Import Permits will not be updated to reflect this change, any permit holders intending to import these species will have to apply for a variation to include these additional species.
