Brachiaria spp. and Urochloa spp. seed for sowing

Effective from 30 June 2017

This notice provides clients of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) notification of changes to import requirements for Brachiaria stolonifera and Urochloa stolonifera for an end use as seed for sowing.


What is the change?

As previously advised in the BICON alert, Brachiaria stolonifera and Urochloa stolonifera seed for sowing from all countries will require an import permit from midnight 27 July 2017 due to updated information regarding biosecurity risk. No other changes have been made to the import conditions.


What does this mean for my imports?


Phase 0: Transition phase

  • Seed consignments that land in Australia prior to or on 27 July 2017 will be permitted entry into Australia without a valid import permit.

  • Commercial documentation must be provided to the department to verify that the date of export was prior to 27 July 2017. Seed imports meeting this transition phase may be cleared under the ‘Brachiaria spp. and Urochloa spp. seed for sowing’ BICON case.

Phase 0 expires at midnight 27 July 2017 and will be replaced by Phase 1 conditions on 28 July 2017.

Phase 1: A valid permit will be required for importing Brachiaria stolonifera and Urochloa stolonifera seed for sowing

  • Seed consignments that land in Australia on or after 28 July 2017 will require a valid import permit.
