Cannabis spp. as nursery stock

Effective from 5 July 2017

New conditions for Cannabis spp. cuttings (June 2017)

This notice provides clients of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) notification of new import conditions for Cannabis cuttings.

What is the change?

  • The department has completed a review of the biosecurity risks associated with Cannabis cuttings and they are now permitted under new conditions. Cannabis cuttings will require inspection, dipping and then to be grown and disease screened (including active testing) at the Government Quarantine station at Mickleham for a minimum period of 3 months.

  • The full import conditions are now available in the BICON Case ‘Cannabis spp. for use as Nursery stock’

  • Prior to applying for an import permit from the Department of Agriculture, importers:

  1. are required to make a booking at the Quarantine station. Bookings at the quarantine station are made through the department’s “Post Entry Biosecurity System (PEBS)”. The station can be contacted on 1800 900 090 or via email at peqservices@agriculture.gov.au

  2. are required to ensure all other government licenses/permissions are obtained, such as licences from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (Office of Drug Control).
