Plant species requiring further assessment

Effective from 25 October 2019

The following genera have been added:

Bucephalandra pygmaea has been added.

Background:

The department's 'Plant species requiring further assessment' BICON case covers those species assessed through the Weed Risk Assessment system as requiring further evaluation.

Consistent with the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures, the department generally regulates at species level; therefore, Weed Risk Assessments are conducted at the species, rather than genus level.

The genus Bucephalandra has been removed but Bucephalandra pygmaea has been added as this species has undergone Weed Risk Assessment.

Should clients propose to import species of these genera which have been removed, the species must first be assessed through the department's Weed Risk Assessment system.

For more information on weed risk assessment, please refer to the ‘Weed assessment of new plant imports’ website (http://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/risk-analysis/weeds).
