Gamma irradiation added as an onshore treatment option for celery/fennel seed for human consumption

Effective from 23 July 2021

Based on Food Standards Australia New Zealand Code (FZANZ) It is safe to treat spice seeds with gamma irradiation at the prescribed rate for devitalisation and pathogen control purposes. This aligns with biosecurity requirement for seeds that require devitalisation prior to release from biosecurity. Fennel and celery seeds now can be treated with gamma irradiation at 25 kGy in a department approved facility in the first port of arrival.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers and brokers of fennel seeds and celery seeds.
